ZHAO WEI FILMS is one of the key players in the Singapore film industry. In 1995, it released its maiden feature, MEE POK MAN. Directed by company founder Eric Khoo, the critical hit not only ignited a resurgence of filmmaking in Singapore, but was also the first local film to travel to international festivals including Berlin and Venice. His second film, 12 STOREYS, became the first Singaporean film selected for the Cannes Film Festival in the Un Certain Regard section. Khoo’s BE WITH ME was the opening film of the 2005 Cannes Directors’ Fortnight, while MY MAGIC his fourth feature has the distinction of being the only Singaporean film to vie for the Palm D'or in Cannes (2008).
Zhao Wei Films collaborated with HBO Asia in 2018 to produce the six-part anthology series FOLKLORE (2018), which was renewed for a second season in 2021. The series, showrun by Eric Khoo, brought together an ensemble of acclaimed filmmakers from across the region, including Pen-ek Ratanaruang and Sitisiri Mongkolsiri from Thailand, Joko Anwar from Indonesia, Erik Matti from Philippines and Shih-Han Liao from Taiwan. FOLKLORE garnered widespread attention and critical acclaim at prestigious film festivals such as the Toronto International Film Festival, Fantastic Fest, Sitges, Series Mania, and the Tokyo International Film Festival.
Zhao Wei Films once again partnered with HBO Asia in 2022 to create FOOD AFFAIR WITH MARK WIENS, a six-episode food documentary series that premiered on HBO Max. HUNGRY SOULS (2023), a five-part supernatural drama, was co-developed with CJ ENM.
In 2023, Zhao Wei Films co-produced Kenneth Dagatan’s IN MY MOTHER’S SKIN (2023), which had its world premiere at the Sundance Film Festival. The company’s latest feature film, SPIRIT WORLD (2024), directed by Eric Khoo, premiered as the closing film of the 29th Busan International Film Festival.
Zhao Wei Films has nurtured Singaporean film talents, several of whom have made their mark on the world stage, including Royston Tan, Brian Gothong Tan, Boo Junfeng, and Nicole Midori Woodford.
These productions have been represented internationally by the likes of Mk2 , Bavaria, The Match Factory, Celluloid Dreams and Wild Bunch.
GORYLAH PICTURES was established in 2009 in Singapore by Zhao Wei Films and Infinite Studios, with the aim of creating an independent horror and fantastical genre label.
Long time collaborators Eric Khoo from Zhao Wei Films and Mike Wiluan from Infinite Studios serve as Executive Producers under the Gorylah label, and together with the team at Gorylah, collaborate with filmmakers to introduce South East Asian talents and its unique brand of genre films to the rest of the world.
Gorylah has produced critically acclaimed genre films such as MACABRE (2009), which was screened at the Bucheon International Fantastic Film Festival, as well as local horror favorites including 23:59 (2009), GHOST CHILD (2013), and 23:59 – THE HAUNTING HOUR (2018).
Gorylah recently premiered its latest feature, ORANG IKAN (2024), a WWII-era creature feature directed by Mike Wiluan. The film had its world premiere at the Tokyo International Film Festival and was also screened at the 23rd edition of the Trieste Science Fiction Festival. The company’s latest co-production, MORTE CUCINA (2025), a revenge-driven food drama, reunites Pen-ek Ratanaruang and Christopher Doyle in their latest collaboration.
